Upgrade Pasukan

Upgrade dalam game Age of Empires 2 merupakan perubahan ketingkat yang lebih tinggi itupun kalau seting permainan bukan "Post Imperial" karena pada setingan tersebut tidak ada yang perlu di-upgrade lagi. Untuk melakukan upgarde diperlukan sejumlah resource (sumber daya) tertentu sesuai dengan negara masing-masing, ada yang murah, ada yang mahal, ada yang memerlukan wood, ada pula yang harus dengan gold, dan sebagainya. Pada permainan AOE 2 ini, upgrade dibagi 4 bagian yaitu :
  1. Upgrade Zaman: Meningkatkan zaman (Age) ketingkat yang lebih tinggi sehingga bangunan, teknologi, dan militer menjadi lebih komplek dan lebih sempurna. Upgrade zaman itu terdiri dari Dark Age, Feudal Age, Castle Age, dan Imperial Age.
  2. Upgrade Pasukan atau Upgrade Militer: Meningkatkan level pasukan ke tingkat yang lebih tinggi baik dari segi hit point (daya serang), armor (daya tahan), line of sight (jangkauan pandangan),  range (jarak serang), speed (kecepatan) dan sebaginya. Pada umumnya pasukan yang telah di-upgrade bisa terlihat dari penampilan dan accesories pasukan tersebut, bahkan namanyapun bisa berubah seperti Knight, menjadi Cavalier, kemudian menjadi Paladin.
  3. Upgrade Ekonomi : Meningkatkan segala sesuatu yang berhubungan dengan resourse (sumber daya ekonomi) dimana ekonomi akan lebih cepat diproduksi, pasukan menjadi lebih murah, trade cart menjadi lebih cepat, pajak pengiriman resourse menjadi lebih murah, dan sebagainya. Contohnya : upgrade yang dilakukan pada Lumbercamp, Gold and Stone Mine, Mill, Town Center, Market, dan sebaginya.
  4. Upgarde Bangunan : Untuk meningkatkan kekuatan dan kualitas bangunan baik dari segi kekuatan (armor), hit point, daya tampung, dan line of sight.
