Pada prinsipnya sama dengan game AOE 2 untuk PC. Dalam permainan ini, pemain bertanggung jawab mengatur peradaban agar dapat mengembangkan zaman sehingga dapat mengalahkan musuh. Pemain dapat melakukan upgrade zaman, upgrade pasukan, upgrade peralatan, dan upgrade teknologi. Semua tujuan itu dapat dicapai apabila ekonomi kuat.

Spesifikasi
Untuk dapat menainkan game ini di Pocket PC, hal yang perlu Anda ketahui adalah specifikasi di PPC Anda antara lain kapasitas memori. File yang di-download sekitar 25 MB file, gunakan memori external seperti memori card. Main game : 8.1 MB, Campaign Game : 6.6 MB,  Scenario: 1,3 MB. Anda juga akan memerlukan setidaknya 10MB space memori kertika bermain.

Permainan ini dimainkan dalam modus landsekap tetapi Anda dapat mengatur sisi yang cocok (misalnya sudah terbiasa dengan tanga kiri). Game Age of Empires versi mobile ini belum memiliki fiture online.
